Home is where you make it
Your 1-Minute Leadership Tip
Home is where you make it.
I often casually remark that Saskatoon is just a big small town. We all know “somebody who knows somebody”.
I share this story because of what struck me this night…
March 20, 2019
It was the night of the 22nd annual NSBA Business Builders Awards. I had the distinct joy and honour of co-hosting with Brenda Nowakowski to help celebrate the success of local businesses.
I had a moment, looking out at the happy and energetic crowd of almost 700 business people…there were more people in that Prairieland Park ballroom than in my hometown of Raymore, Saskatchewan!
It has been over 20 years since I left the comfort of my hometown (where I knew everyone) to move to the big city (where I only knew a handful of people) to attend the University of Saskatchewan.
In my hometown, everyone helped each other. We had to support each other for the community to survive and thrive.
My parents owned the local pharmacy. I remember people would phone our home after-hours and my Mom would drive down to the store to fill a prescription for someone that couldn’t wait until the next morning.
Most of those same people would be the ones that also faithfully supported the store (instead of shopping in the city) and together everyone fundraised & volunteered at the rinks, the churches, the school and so on.
What I observed that night was excited (and maybe nervous) nominees, gracious award recipients and enthusiastic guests. Overall, the vibe was of genuine happiness for each other’s success.
We all want each other to do well. We lend a helping hand. We support each other. We all win together. We live and give generously.
It was that night, it struck me, this city isn’t much different than my hometown. I had an overwhelming feeling of gratitude and pride for our city of Saskatoon, “my big small town”.
Yes, I believe it to be true, “home is where you make it”. Do you agree?
Where’s your hometown? I would love to hear where you are from!
We live up to our motto: Saskatoon Shines! Guess what? YOU make it Shine!
“Keep your face to the sun and you will never see the shadows.”
